Tummy Tuck

Pregnancy, extreme weight gain or loss, genetic predisposition and aging – they all impact your abdominal muscles and waistline. Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, improves the shape of abdomen by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the muscles. Bringing the abdominal muscles back to their normal anatomic position not only flattens the abdomen and enhances the appearance of the waist but it has also helped some women resolve their low back pain.

Tummy tuck expectations

The tummy tuck operation has a very high patient satisfaction rate. There is a limit to how much you can improve the appearance of your tummy without surgery. The best candidates for a tummy tuck are individuals who are close to their ideal body weight, do not smoke, are in good health, and do not let their weight fluctuate by more than about 5 lbs.

While every case is different, a typical abdominoplasty takes four to five hours. The procedure starts with the administration of anesthesia or a sedative. Horizontal incisions are made near the pubic hairline and kept within garment lines. An incision is also made around the belly button to remove skin from the upper abdomen. The abdominal muscles are brought together using sutures and excess skin is removed. A high lateral tension technique is used to remove the excess skin and obtain the desired youthful appearance of the abdomen.

After abdominoplasty surgery

Following abdominoplasty, an abdominal binder is worn to prevent fluid collections, minimize swelling and provide support to the abdominal muscle repair. Drains are placed which are usually removed by the fifth postoperative day. Incisions usually heal very well and they are easy to hide because they fall within the bikini line.

Dr. Kessler will educate you on incision care and daily activity. The first few days you sleep in a lawn chair position and walk with a stooped posture. By the fifth day you are upright and the drains are usually removed. You’ll return on day five and ten to have sutures removed. By day ten to fourteen you be able to resume work and lower extremity exercise.

Recovery from the procedure

You will not be able to do core exercise for four weeks, and sexual activity must be avoided for at least two weeks. Bruising and swelling are common following the surgery, but they’ll go away after a few weeks. Results are long term if you maintain your weight through proper diet and exercise.
