Facial aging is a serious concern for men and women alike. In my experience, the neck and lower eyelids are the first areas to demonstrate facial aging. An isolated necklift , however, is usually limited to individuals who are not yet demonstrating signs of aging of the face such as jowling or deepening marionette lines. The structures of the neck and face are continuous so if there are signs of facial aging it is best to combine the face and neck lift in one operation. This will be assessed by Dr. Kessler and discussed with you at the time of your consultation.

Liposuction is ideal for young individuals with good skin quality and fullness below the chin. This treatment uses minimal incisions and can be done under local anesthesia. The recovery is generally quick but requires wearing a compression strap for a minimum of 2 weeks.

When the skin right below the chin relaxes visible bands appear. These bands can be caused by the platysma muscle, the skin or a combination of both. The platysma is a thin muscle immediately below the skin which shortens as we age. This creates increasing visibility as a band immediately to the right and left of the center of the chin. Once these bands are present no aesthetic device will resolve them.

There are two neck lift procedures depending on the degree of relaxation of the neck skin and fullness of the neck. When the banding is minimal and there is fullness in the central neck, the necklift can be done through a small incision under the chin. When the banding is more pronounced and the skin is inelastic incisions behind the ear will be needed in addition to the incision under the chin. Put simply, the more lax the skin, the more extensive the procedure it requires.

The recovery is relatively quick with most individuals returning to work at a week to 10 days. The skin of the neck remains numb for weeks to months but eventually returns to normal.
