A great deal of media attention has been given to the contour of the male neck and jawline, especially in Newport Beach. Social media is full of videos using fillers to achieve Brad Pitt-like results. While women see aging in the face men tend to see aging in the neck.

Contour improvements in this area can be achieved with a number of techniques depending on your presentation.

If the neck contour is reasonable but the jawline or chin is poorly defined fillers can be placed at the angle of the mandible and in the chin. A chin implant can also add that needed projection through a small incision with a quick recovery.

Younger men with double chins and indistinct jawlines are often good candidates for liposuction of the neck. Fat can also be transferred to the jawline and angle of the jaw to create a stronger appearance to the face. If the fullness below the chin is not just fat, manipulation of the muscles of the central neck can be done to achieve a sharper chin-neck angle. This can be done through a small incision under the chin if the skin quality is good. If the skin is loose incisions can be placed behind the ear in cosmetically hidden locations to allow for removal of the skin.

If there are signs of aging in the face, the neck lift is a routine part of the facelift. This operation can be combined with fat grafting to restore a youthful appearance to the face and neck. Attention to the hairline and contours of the ear is critical in male facial surgery as we do not have the advantage of altering our hairstyles or wearing makeup to camouflage poor scarring.

Necklift Recovery

Although the recovery is related to the specific operation you undergo, contouring of the neck has a relatively easy and quick recovery. Generally, the skin of the neck is made numb by the procedure, and discomfort is perceived more as tightness. A compressive dressing is used for the first two weeks. This helps to prevent fluid collection and minimize swelling but most people report feeling more comfortable while wearing it. Stitches are removed on day 5 under the chin and on day 10 if they are placed behind the ear.

Most men will return to work in a week to ten days. Limited activity is recommended for the first two weeks and individual guidance will be given by Dr. Kessler after that period.

Results are obvious immediately but continue to improve over the following three months.
