Botox Injections

Holding on to a youthful face requires a lot of care and effort. Moisturizer, makeup, and chemical peels can do a lot, but they cannot necessarily correct the deep creases that form around the mouth and between the eyes. The tremendously effective wrinkle treatment known as Botox is a non-surgical way to address facial wrinkles. Botox is FDA-approved and considered very safe when used by a trained medical professional. It best treats dynamic wrinkles, which are those caused by repeated movement of the facial muscles. Expression lines such as worry lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines are minimized, while static wrinkles due to age and sagging skin can be remedied with dermal fillers.

What is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox is derived from the botulinum toxin. Despite the concern that statement raises, it is not poisonous. The substance is purified and safe in the small doses which are delivered for wrinkle treatment. When injected by someone with in-depth knowledge and experience, Botox injections are virtually painless. Some options are available for those that do not tolerate discomfort well, such as numbing medications and blasts of cold air.

How is the Injectable used?

A thin needle is used to inject minute amounts of Botox into the skin and muscles. The number of injections used will depend on the extent of the wrinkles and creases in the area being treated.

The substance blocks nerve impulses that result in the wrinkle-causing facial movements. The muscles in the treated sites will remain paralyzed from 4 to 8 months, after which additional treatments will be needed to maintain the crease-free appearance. In some cases the injection may last a little as 3 months and as long as 12 months.

Patients can return to normal activity immediately following a Botox injection. Care should be taken not to rub the treated area though so the substance does not migrate beyond the targeted area. Within a few days, patients will begin to notice a smoother, more peaceful appearance taking over their face.

Derived from the Botulinum toxin, Botox Cosmetic is an extremely effective treatment for wrinkles and fine lines caused by repetitive muscle movement (dynamic wrinkles). When injected, Botox will cause a temporary paralysis of the targeted muscles; relaxing and smoothing the area.

04 Is any anesthesia used for the Botox Cosmetic procedure?

No anesthesia is normally required during Botox Cosmetic injections, as the procedure is almost painless. Dr. Kessler does provide patients with the option of a topical anesthetic or cool air blasts, to keep discomfort to a minimum.

05 How is a procedure with Botox Cosmetic performed?

During a treatment, Dr. Kessler will use a thin needle to inject a very small amount of Botox Cosmetic into the muscles of a predetermined area.

06 How long is the procedure time for Botox Cosmetic?

A treatment with Botox Cosmetic will take less than 30 minutes.

07 How long will the results of Botox Cosmetic last?

The targeted muscles will remain paralyzed between three and four months after a Botox Cosmetic treatment. After this time a repeat treatment will be needed to maintain results.

08 Are injections with Botox Cosmetic painful?

Injections of Botox Cosmetic are virtually painless. For patients who do not tolerate discomfort well, there are options available such as topic anesthetics or blasts of cold air.

09 What is the recovery like after the Botox Cosmetic treatment?

Patients are able to return to their normal activities the same afternoon as their Botox Cosmetic treatment. Some initial swelling and redness may occur, but this will pass over the first 48 hours. Patients need to take care not to rub the treatment area for several days, as this can cause the Botox to migrate beyond the target area.

10 When can I return to work after a treatment with Botox Cosmetic?

Patients normally feel well enough to return to work or school immediately after a Botox Cosmetic treatment.

11 What are the risks of a Botox Cosmetic treatment?

Botox Cosmetic treatments are considered safe and effective. While complications are rare, these may include excessive bleeding, scarring, infection, area numbness, and asymmetry.
