Artistry and Caring for a Masterpiece Called You
Mommy MakeoverA mommy makeover is defined as a combination of body contouring procedures which enhance the appearance of both the abdomen and the breasts. It is generally recommended that you wait nine months to a year post-partum or later to allow your body to heal and restore your natural contours to the best of your ability. When addressing both the breast and the abdomen a variety of contouring operations may be performed. The breast may need to be lifted, augmented or both. The abdominal contours can be addressed with liposuction or a tummy tuck. The best combination of procedures to meet your desired goals will be determined at your consultation with Dr Kessler.
Candidates for a mommy makeover are women who wish to restore the youthful contours of their breast and tummy to their pre-baby appearance. They are at a stable weight which is close to their ideal weight and have no plans for future children. Preferably, patients are within 30% of their ideal weight.
If you do have plans to add to your family, lesser procedures may be an option but Dr Kessler will most likely suggest you wait to undergo the procedure until after your family is complete. Weight gain after these procedures will diminish the optimal results achieved by your surgery. Regular exercise and a weight stabilizing diet are the best way to preserve successful outcomes over the long term.
Mommy makeovers are conducted at a certified outpatient facility. Surgery typically takes 6 hours, but the length of the procedure can vary depending on the specific techniques used and the procedures we are performing. General anesthesia is used to maximize patient comfort.
All incisions are cosmetically positioned and are concealed within garment lines.
Common techniques used during the mommy makeover include the following:
Localized fatty deposits are common following weight gain from pregnancy. It can seem as though the tummy area is the last area to return to its previous appearance. The physical changes which take place during pregnancy alter the body in ways which can only be restored through surgery.
Liposuction of the abdomen, flanks and thighs is an effective way to permanently remove unwanted fat cells. The targeted area will be injected with a fluid including anesthetic, epinephrine and saline before being suctioned. This is an option for women whose abdominal muscles have not been significantly displaced by the pregnancy.
Often liposuction is not enough to restore the waistline. Pregnancy can cause the abdominal muscles to become separated and skin to become too lax to shrink back to its original contour. Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck as it is also called, corrects both of these issues.
The abdominal muscles are repositioned and held in place with sutures. Excision of the skin improves sagging between the pubic hairline and the belly button. Skin of the upper abdomen is also addressed by this technique.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause the tissue to lose elasticity, and loss of upper pole breast volume which results in drooping. Breast lift, or mastopexy, enhances the contour of the breast by raising the nipple to a higher, more youthful position. Excess skin is also removed and the areola may be reduced in size or repositioned. A circumvertical or inverted-T incision may be used, depending on the anatomy of the patient. A breast lift does not improve volume. For that, a breast augmentation is necessary. Fat grafting to the breast is also a possibility depending on the individuals desire for volume.
RecoveryTen to fourteen days is the general guideline for recovery following a mommy makeover. This is very dependent on the procedures which are done. When both the muscles of the chest and abdomen are to be manipulated or when I anticipate surgery taking more than 7-8 hours I encourage my clients to consider staging their operations. The individual recovery from each procedure is actually easier the that of the combined procedure. Usually by the end of the two weeks most patients are able to return to work. Between two and four weeks, light lower extremity exercise can be resumed. It is typically 4-6 weeks before your energy returns to normal.
Any stitches used to close incisions will be removed between five and ten days. During recovery, you should expect to experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the affected sites which improves gradually each day. Significant complications with most cosmetic procedures are uncommon.
+^01 What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is a set of surgical procedures, designed to restore a more youthful figure and contoured appearance. Often, a Mommy Makeover is used to improve the body after pregnancy. The set of procedures may include Breast Augmentation, a Tummy Tuck, and Liposuction; although Dr. Kessler can tailor the surgery to a patient’s individual needs.
+^02 How is the Mommy Makeover performed?
How a Mommy Makeover is performed will vary according to each patient’s needs. Generally, Dr. Kessler will make an incision above the public line. From here he will eliminate excess fat and skin, reposition the abdominal muscles so it is flat and smooth. If Breast Implants are utilized, an incision will be made around the areola, or under the breast crease. Saline or Silicone implants will then be inserted. Liposuction is performed with a small cannula (tube) inserted in an area, which then suctions out fatty tissue. Dr. Kessler can use these techniques to beautifully sculpt the body.
+^05 What type of anesthesia is used during the Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is performed under general anesthesia.
+^07 What can I expect from the Mommy Makeover recovery period?
Patients need to expect a six week recovery period after their Mommy Makeover. There will be swelling, bruising, and moderate discomfort during the first week to two weeks. Dr. Kessler will prescribe appropriate pain medications during this time, to keep patients comfortable. Sutures are generally removed in seven to ten days.
+^08 When can I return to work after a Mommy Makeover?
Normally, patients are well enough to return to work seven to fourteen days after their Mommy Makeover.
+^09 Will there be scarring after my Mommy Makeover?
Yes, scarring will occur after a Mommy Makeover. These can fade over time, but will remain noticeable. Dr. Kessler will position the incisions to allow swimwear and clothing to cover the scars well.
