Breast Augmentation with Lift

When the nipple is at the level of the breast fold or below an implant alone will not achieve the optimal breast aesthetic. In this situation a breast lift is needed to tighten the breast skin and place the nipple in a more youthful position. As women age, volume is lost from the breast and the skin does not tighten. This is most obvious above the nipple as you begin to see a gap between the breast and the upper aspect of the bra. The breast tissue that remains below the nipple begins to fall over the fold. These changes are often made worse by fluctuations in weight, childbirth, and breast-feeding.

To counteract these changes, a Breast Augmentation paired with a Breast Lift, can restore a firm and shapely breast. Also known as an Augmentation Mastopexy, the surgical technique is a combination of two procedures. By grouping these two methods, breast volume can be increased, sagging breast tissue eliminated, and the nipple repositioned to a youthful height. Tissue of the breasts will be tightened and upper pole fullness restored.

Breast Augmentation and a Breast Lift can be performed independently of each other. Traditionally these operations have been staged, meaning done separately at a 3 month interval. Although there are individuals who will need to be staged, most women can have the combined procedure in one operation.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal patient is someone in overall good health, close to their ideal body weight and with reasonable surgical expectations. The Procedure

A Breast Augmentation plus Breast Lift will take between three and five hours to complete. The outpatient procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Long acting local anesthetic blocks are used during the procedure to help speed your recovery.

The Recovery

You should expect a week of recovery time. Initially, patients may experience a feeling of pressure in the chest, mild swelling, and bruising. This will resolve over the first week after surgery. Mild discomfort may be experienced. Dr. Kessler will prescribe appropriate pain medications for you.

Patients are normally feeling well enough to return to work in a week. Strenuous activity, exercise, and lifting should be put on hold for four to six weeks. Both the Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift procedures are considered extremely safe. Complications are a rare occurrence, but as with any surgical procedure, the risk is present.

The problems associated with a Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift may include bleeding, unexpected scarring, infection, loss of nipple sensation, asymmetry, and delayed wound healing. A patient’s best defense against any complications is to use a reputable, experienced plastic surgeon for their procedure.

04 Can I choose to have only a breast lift (without implants), or a breast augmentation (without a lit)?

Yes, patients have the option of choosing either procedure separately. However, raising the breasts to a higher position will not replace lost volume; adding just an implant will not correct lax tissue, therefore the new, heavier tissue will only make the breasts look farther low on the chest.
