Autologous fat transferPatient’s looking for an answer to facial volume loss without having to keep up their fillers or risk of allergic reactions can look to autologous fat transfer. This is also known as fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection. Fat transfer works like other dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face but uses your own fat.
Volume loss occurs in predictable regions of the face such as the midface just below the eyes and the area just below the cheek bones. We also see volume loss at the jaw line which is magnified by the retained fat at the "jowl". Each of these areas can be addressed by fat transfer. A great deal of media attention has been given to fat transfer to the buttock and breast but there is tremendous benefit to facial fat grafting .
Because the fat is from your own body, there is no threat of rejection or allergic response. It can be performed on a person with any skin type.
Fat cells from areas of the body that host stubborn fat deposits can be harvested for use in other locations where they are actually wanted. The volume placed is dictated by your individual need and is not limited by the number of 1 cc syringes of typical dermal fillers. Both the site the fat is being taken from and the area where it is injected are treated with local anesthesia for the 1 to 2 hour procedure.
A minimal incision is made in the fat donor site, usually the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs A narrow hollow tube, called a cannula, is inserted to dislodge the body fat and a syringe draws it out. No visible incisions are created on the face as the fat is injected with fine needles. The cheeks, brows, temples and jawline are then contoured to achieve a more youthful fullness to the face.
There is little downtime with fat transfer. Swelling is present for the week. Patients return to work and normal activity within a few days. Some bruising or swelling may occur, especially in the donor locations, but will lessen over the time.
Over the following 3 months some of the fat cells will be lost while others establish permanent residence. We usually see at least a 50% take of the grafted cells. The successfully transplanted fat cells are permanent. The beauty of fat grafting is if you desire more volume after the 3 month follow up additional treatments may be done until your desired aesthetic is achieved.
