What is Botox cosmetic?

Cosmetic botox is derived from the botulinum toxin. Despite the concern that statement raises, it is not poisonous. The substance is purified and safe in the small doses which are delivered by injection to specific site. When injected by someone with in-depth knowledge and experience, Botox injections are relatively painless but topical numbing creams and ice can help make this even more tolerable.

How is the Botox Injectable used?

A thin needle is used to inject minute amounts of Botox into the muscles. The amount of Botox used will depend on the number of areas treated and the extent of the movement of the muscles in the area being treated. The muscles in the treated sites will remain paralyzed on average about 3 months, after which additional treatment will be needed to maintain the result. Although the average duration is 3 months some individuals will see return of movement sooner while the majority last a bit longer. Avoiding exercise immediately after treatment is recommended but normal activity can resume the following morning unless some bruising occurs. In that case, Dr Kessler recommends avoiding cardio or elevation of your blood pressure for 48 hours after treatment. It takes about five days to see the effects of the treatment. Dr Kessler recommends evaluating your results on the fifth or sixth day. Checking the resting position of the eyebrows as well as the lines of the face when smiling and raising the brows is important. You should look rested in repose and move naturally when animating. Dr. Kessler will always place the minimal amount of Botox you need. He would rather add a little in a week than have too profound an effect which takes 6-8 weeks to wear off.

Adverse Effects of Botox

The adverse effects of Botox are predominantly related to it being injected into the wrong place. If too much Botox is placed in the forehead or it is placed too close to the eyebrows, the eyebrow can drop. This makes the brow feel heavy and can even impact your vision as eyelid skin descends at the level of the upper lid crease. If Botox drifts down into the upper eyelid, the upper eyelid can drop. The position of the eyelid will actually cover a portion of the pupil. This can be managed with eyedrops to temporarily elevate the lid but definitive treatment requires time for the Botox bond to be broken. This can take 6-8 weeks. Thankfully these are rare occurrence when your injector understands the anatomy. Although people say they have a Botox allergy, Dr. Kessler believes the allergy is related to the preservatives present in the saline used to reconstitute the Botox. Many clients have been successfully treated by Dr. Kessler who believed they had this allergy.
