Women undergo breast surgery for various reasons, but cosmetic improvement is important for both emotional and physical health. Unfortunately, not every procedure generates enduring positive results making revision surgery necessary.
Complications from prior breast surgery can be improved or corrected with revision breast surgery. Issues that necessitate revision include capsular contracture, ruptured implants, breast asymmetry, and implant malposition to name the most common.
Revision surgery may not be the result of an error with the previous surgery. Individuals may also desire a size change going either larger or smaller depending on their circumstance. As the breast ages, volume is lost and skin relaxes, the breast may begin to descend while the breast implants maintain their position. This can be addressed with a breast lift to restore a more youthful appearance.
The Revision Breast Surgery Process
Consultation with Dr. Kessler will be comprehensive. Ideally you will have records of your previous surgery and knowledge of the breast implant size and profile. With this information Dr. Kessler will be able to understand your issue and discuss the possible corrections. Equally important is to understand your aesthetic goals, the more defined your goals the better Dr. Kessler can plan to meet them. Photos of ideal breasts out of garments and in profile view are best to help understand the type of implant you desire.
Where incisions are placed and how the breast will need to be manipulated will be reviewed by Dr Kessler during the consultation. Whenever possible, previous incisions are used to limit additional scarring. If additional incisions are required he will discuss that with you.
Advances in this area have made revision surgery dramatically better than years ago. Fat grafting allows for sculpting of the breast and replacement of soft tissue to address volume loss and implant rippling. Dermal grafts are also available to support implants and the breast while also adding needed soft tissue.
Your Breast Revision will be performed in Dr. Robert Kessler's surgery center located in Corona Del Mar.
Revision Breast Surgery Recovery
Sometimes patients find that recovery following a revision is easier than the primary surgery, especially when only minor manipulation of the breast is needed. One week after revision breast surgery most women are feeling well enough to return to work. This is all dependent on the extent of the procedure necessary.
Sutures will be removed on postoperative day five and remaining sutures on day ten. Exercise of the lower extremities and core can begin at two weeks. Upper body exercise may begin after four weeks.
- 01 What is a breast revision?
A Breast Revision is a surgical procedure designed to correct or improve the results from a previous Breast Augmentation. Breast Revision can correct problems with implants, including Capsular Contracture, ruptures, implant deflation, wrinkling, or malposition.
- 02 How is a breast revision performed?
The specific technique used will depend upon the problem which needs to be addressed. A capsular contracture can be performed by removing the capsule often without creating a new incision. Complex revisions may require fat grafting or the addition of dermal tissue to increase the thickness of the breast tissue around the implant.
Implants can be removed, replaced and put in new locations, such as under the muscle if the original position was below the muscle, excise unwanted tissue, and reshape the breast. Once the appropriate changes have been made, the incisions will be sutured and allowed to heal.
- 03 Who is a good candidate for a breast revision?
The perfect candidate for a Breast Revision will be a woman in generally good health, dealing with the rupture of a silicone implant, the deflation of a saline implant, or Capsular Contracture. Women with thinning breast tissue and visible rippling or malposition of the implant are also candidates for revision surgery.
- 04 Where is the breast revision procedure performed?
Dr. Kessler performs surgery at a nearby accredited outpatient Surgery Center.
- 05 What type of anesthesia is used during a breast revision?
A Breast Revision is performed under general anesthesia.
- 06 How long does a breast revision procedure take?
Depending on the specific patient, a Breast Revision will take around three hours, depending on the extent of correction required.
- 07 What can I expect from the breast revision recovery?
Patients should expect their recovery from Breast Revision to last about seven to fourteen days. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising may occur initially, but will resolve over the first several weeks. Proper pain medications will be prescribed to keep patients comfortable at home during their recovery. Exercise and heavy lifting should be postponed until at least four to six weeks after surgery.
- 08 When can I return to work after a breast revision?
Breast Revision patients are normally feeling well enough to return to work in approximately five to seven days depending on the procedure.
- 09 What are the risks of a breast revision?
Although rare, potential complications from a Breast Revision can include excessive bleeding, asymmetry, loss of nipple or breast sensation, and infection.
- 10 Will a breast revision leave scars?
Yes, patients should expect some visible scarring after their procedure, depending on the exact Breast Revision procedure performed. Scars will fade significantly over time.
- 11 Can I finance my breast revision?
