Tummy tuck is one of the most common body contouring operations performed today. The procedure is safe and yields dramatic results.
With the growth of the developing baby, the lining of the abdominal which contains the rectus muscles stretches to accommodate. The muscles which typically lie together in the center of the abdominal wall get moved to the sides. The abdominal skin also stretches. How much tightening of the strength layer and skin occurs is related to a number of factors such as how much weight was gained and quite frankly genetics.
With multiple pregnancies the affects on these structures is compounded. Stretch a water balloon once and it snaps back pretty well. Do it three or four times and it can’t come back to its original shape. Diet and exercise are great at restoring muscle and minimizing the impact of fatty deposits but only surgery can put the muscles back into their proper anatomic position and remove excess skin.
Tummy Tuck Expectations
The formal tummy tuck tightens the muscles and removes all the skin from the belly button to the pubic hairline. This will not only make your tummy flat, it will enhance your waist, raise your pubic area to a more youthful posture and even improve the appearance of the upper anterior thigh.
When the muscles need to be repaired but there is not enough skin to remove it all from the belly button to the pubic area a decision has to be made. If there is a relatively small amount of skin an excellent choice is to simply lower the belly button. The belly button should only be lowered a few centimeters otherwise the proportions of the abdomen are thrown off. When there is more skin to remove and the belly button will appear too low, it is better to leave the belly button where it is and remove as much skin as is needed to achieve the desired contour. This will necessitate a small vertical incision between the new belly button and the pubic hairline to close the defect where the belly button was removed from. This is a far better solution than placing the abdominoplasty incision too high.

After Abdominoplasty Surgery
Following abdominoplasty, an abdominal binder is worn to prevent fluid collections, minimize swelling and provide support to the abdominal muscle repair. Drains are placed which are usually removed by the fifth postoperative day. Incisions usually heal very well and they are easy to hide because they fall within the bikini line.
Dr. Kessler will educate you on incision care and daily activity. The first few days you sleep in a lawn chair position and walk with a stooped posture. By the fifth day you are upright and the drains are usually removed. You’ll return on day five and ten to have sutures removed. By day ten to fourteen you be able to resume work and lower extremity exercise.
Your Tummy Tuck will be performed in Dr. Robert Kessler's surgery center located in Corona Del Mar.
Recovery from the Procedure
You will not be able to do core exercise for four weeks, and sexual activity must be avoided for at least two weeks. Bruising and swelling are common following the surgery, but they’ll go away after a few weeks. Results are long term if you maintain your weight through proper diet and exercise.
