Breast Lift Surgery (Mastopexy)
A breast lift surgery, medically termed mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery that enhances breast contour and overall profile by raising and restoring sagging or drooping breasts. As women age, their breast tissue loses elasticity due to a combination of factors, such as gravity, genetics, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In some instances, the areola grows undesirably large and mastopexy can correct this as well. Breast lifts are commonly performed with breast augmentation procedures to restore volume and firmness for a youthful appearance. Breast lift results are immediate and long lasting.
Is A Breast Lift Right For You?
The only way to be sure if breast lift surgery is the right procedure for you or not is to schedule a consultation at Kessler Plastic Surgery. However, there are some questions you should ask yourself to know if breast lift can help improve the shape of your breast.
1. Are my nipples pointing downward?
The skin present at your breast’s base stretches out and starts to sag. The weight of your breast tissue can pull your nipple downward. Through breast lift surgery, you can reposition your breast tissue and make your nipples face forward.
2. Are my nipples or areolas sitting below the crease under my breast?
While evaluating you for breast lift surgery, the one trait that Dr. Kessler will definitely look for is the position of your nipples or areolas in relation to the crease beneath the breast, known as the inframammary fold. You can try this test by sliding a paper underneath your breast so that it is sitting against your breast crease. Look at yourself in the mirror and check if your nipples are sitting below the paper’s top edge. If yes, then this means that your breasts have sagged enough to warrant the breast lift procedure.
3. Am I satisfied with the size of my breasts?
It is important to note that you won’t be able to change your breasts’ size significantly through a breast lift procedure. Though it can make your breasts look rounder, fuller, and better in a bra. However, if you want your breasts to be smaller or larger, you will need to get the lift done in conjunction with the breast reduction or augmentation procedure respectively.
4. Are my breasts unusually shaped or asymmetrical?
A breast lift procedure can reshape your breast tissue and lift your sagging breasts. This makes it a very effective procedure in improving the symmetry of your breasts.
The surgical process
A breast lift surgery is typically performed in an ambulatory facility or an outpatient surgical suite. The procedure can take three to four hours and is done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.
The surgeon will apply the appropriate incision technique based upon individual patient breast size, shape, severity of sagging and desired outcome. Incisions may be placed around the areola only for minor lifts, around the areola and down the center of the breast (circumvertical or lollipop) for a more significant elevation of the nipple or around the nipple down the center of the breast and in the breast fold (inverted T or Anchor lift). After the proper incisions are made, the breast tissue is lifted and excess skin is removed. The areola is usually reduced for a more attractive appearance. Permanent sutures are used to close the incision lines.
Your Breast Lift will be performed in Dr. Robert Kessler's surgery center located in Corona Del Mar.
Breast Lift Recovery
After your Mastopexy surgery is complete, you will remain closely monitored in a recovery room where gauze dressings and a surgical bra will be applied to control swelling and discomfort. Dr. Kessler does not use drainage tubes in primary mastopexy surgeries.
Dr. Kessler will prescribe medications for pain control both in the outpatient facility and at home. You will be able to go home the same day. Sutures are removed on the fifth and tenth day after surgery.
While most breast lift patients can return to work within one week, it is important to rest on the back and avoid any upper body exercise or pressure on the breasts for approximately one month. Mild discomfort and/or temporary sensation loss in the breast skin is common and can last for up to a year but there should be no sensory loss of the nipples.
- 01 What is a breast lift?
A Breast Lift, also known as a Mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to lift the chest; while improving the sag and depleted volume that can occur after pregnancy, extreme weight loss, or the aging process.
- 02 How is a breast lift performed?
There are 3 breast lift techniques depending on the degree of nipple elevation and breast reshaping that is required. Breast lifts will have one of three final incisions: periareolar incision (circling around the nipple), progressing to periareolar then down the center of the breast, and finally periareolar with the vertical incision as well as horizontally along the breast crease – in an inverted T-shape. From here, Dr. Kessler will remove the excess tissue and skin, reposition the nipple and areola, then suture the breast in position.
- 03 Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
The ideal candidate for a Breast Lift will be a woman, in generally good health, seeking an improvement in the shape and position of her breasts.
- 04 Where is the breast lift procedure performed?
Dr. Kessler performs surgery at a nearby accredited outpatient Surgery Center.
- 05 What type of anesthesia is used during a breast lift?
A Breast Lift is performed under general anesthesia.
- 06 How long does a breast lift procedure take?
Depending on the extent of the procedure, a Breast Lift will take between two and three hours.
- 07 Is a breast lift performed alone?
A Breast Lift can be performed alone. If the patient is seeking additional volume or upper pole fullness, a Breast Lift can be performed with a Breast Augmentation with either implants or fat grafting for optimal results.
- 08 What can i expect from the breast lift recovery?
The recovery of a Breast Lift will take between seven and ten days. Initially, there will be some swelling, bruising, and numbness, although these will resolve over the first few weeks. A soft support bra will be required to ensure the breasts heal appropriately.
- 09 When can i return to work after a breast lift?
Patients generally feel well enough to return to work three to five days after their Mastopexy.
- 10 What are the risks of a breast lift?
While a Breast Lift is considered safe, possible complications include bleeding, loss of nipple sensation, infection, and asymmetry.
- 11 Will a breast lift leave scars?
Yes, a Mastopexy will leave visible scarring on the breast, around the areola and along the breast crease. Most women, however, are so pleased with the improvements from their Breast Lift they are not bothered by the scarring. Generally speaking the periareolar and vertical scars fade nicely over time and the inframammary incision is hidden by the breast.
- 12 Can i finance my breast lift?
Kessler Plastic Surgery accepts cash and credit, as well as the option of medical financing through CareCredit. The Breast Lift procedure may be financed for no down payment, and no interest for the first twelve months. The application for CareCredit can be submitted online to receive instant approval.
My experience with Dr Rob Kessler was extremely pleasant and has changed my life in the most positive ways. He has performed numerous surgeries on me after I had lost weight with having a gastric stomach bypass. He has performed the following surgeries on me: A breast lift, lower body lift, breasts implants, and medial thigh lifts on both legs. The surgeries were a complete success and both patient (me) and doctor were very pleased with the outcome of all the surgeries.
Dr Rob Kessler is very professional and is an expert in the field of plastic surgery. He comes highly recommended by me because he took the challenge of completely restructuring me to the person I am today when other doctors saw me as a high risk patient with too much fab/skin to remove. He did the extreme makeover on me before there was an extreme makeover show in which he is a team member on Dr Garth Fishers team on Extreme Makeover. That’s how good he is.
I would like to reunite with him sometime in the future to possibly have some face work done. It would be a great reunion for us both. Dr. Rob W. Kessler is an awesome doctor.
