What is Perioral Dermabrasion?
What is Perioral Dermabrasion?Perioral Dermabrasion is a medical procedure for restoring or correcting the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles about the lips and chin. This procedure is different from Microdermabrasion performed by an esthetician involving a superficial exfoliation of the skin.
Natural human movements such as speaking or sipping a drink lead to stressing of the skin by the circular muscles around the mouth. With aging and volume loss over time, these temporary folds convert to permanent lines.
Skin care and fillers can do wonders to improve this area but once lines and wrinkles are present a more advanced treatments and methods become necessary.
CO2 laser resurfacing is a very good treatment for mild to moderate perioral lines. Dermabrasion is required for moderate to severe perioral lines.
Perioral dermabrasion, in simple terms, is a physical removal of the epidermis. In certain cases where found necessary, this may also involve the entry into the superficial layer of the dermis. The perioral area is defined by the nasolabial fold, marionette lines and inferior chin border. Perioral dermabrasion is commonly performed in conjunction with the facelift procedure.
A routine perioral dermabrasion can also be done in the office as a stand-alone procedure. The treatment area is completely anesthetized with local anesthesia.
Immediately after the procedure, the skin open and raw. The skin is allowed to scab overnight. Once the scab is formed the discomfort is gone. You are somewhat limited in movement of this area until the scab separates. This will happen somewhere between day 5 and day 8. The stiffness of the scab can make speaking and eating a bit challenging. As the scab separates the beautiful pink healthy skin is revealed.
The use of moisturizer and sunscreens is also advised during this early stage of healing. Slight redness remains for a few weeks, but post the 7-10th day makeup can be applied to camouflage the temporary discoloration.
