A “red flag” is any indicator that something may be amiss, or a clue that something may lead to trouble in the future. This term is used in discussions about a variety of different situations and circumstances, from selecting a romantic partner to choosing a real estate agent. It also applies to conversations about selecting a plastic surgeon.
If you are about to start the search for a plastic surgeon, Dr. Rob Kessler encourages you to stay on alert for the following red flags.
They’re not board-certified.
This is the most important credential a plastic surgeon can have. The surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery — not the American Board of Dermatology, the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or any other board. (Note that some plastic surgeons have duel certification by the ABPS and another board.)
Certification from the ABPS indicates that the surgeon has years of surgical training, including at least two years of training devoted specifically to plastic surgery; has passed rigorous exams; and adheres to stringent standards of safety and ethics.
They promise perfection without any risks.
Reputable plastic surgeons are open and honest about their surgical results. They also talk to patients about the risks and possible complications of surgery. If a plastic surgeon promises you a perfect result and neglects to mention any risks, this is a clear red flag.
There are no guarantees in plastic surgery. Even an expertly performed procedure where the surgeon does everything textbook-perfect can cause an unwanted complication. A trustworthy surgeon should be candid about this.
They try to upsell you.
It is a red flag if a surgeon suggests procedures that you didn’t express an interest in, or procedures that don’t seem to meet your specific needs. The right plastic surgeon may recommend procedures that complement or enhance other procedures, but their suggestions should make sense.
They offer a deal “too good to be true.”
Avoid any surgeon that offers a deal that seems too good to be true — it probably is! Plastic surgery is a big investment; with the right surgeon, it is worthwhile. Avoid selecting a surgeon solely because they offer bargain pricing.
They make you feel uncomfortable.
Plastic surgery is a partnership between surgeon and patient. If you feel uncomfortable or disconnected from the surgeon during your consultation, trust your gut and find someone else.
