What is Lip Augmentation?The addition of volume to the lips can be done in two distinctly different ways each yielding beautiful natural results.
The first and most common augmentation procedure is to add volume to the vermillion or red portion of the lips. Attention must be paid to the appearance and structure of the lip before augmentation to enhance the shape proportionally. The upper lip has 3 elements. The central element is called the tubercle and sits as a central fullness whose lowest point is below that of the lateral lip. The lateral elements extend from the commissure to the border of the tubercle. Maintaining these 3 elements is important to the natural appearance of the upper lip. The lower lip has only two elements and often has a central depression to receive the tubercle
The lower lip should also be about 1.5 times the size of the upper lip. Although multiple injection techniques can achieve a nice result, I believe injection with a cannula yields the most control and the least bruising.
As we age the lip elongates, the transition between the skin of the lip and the vermillion flattens and radial lines cross the vermillion causing lipstick to bleed into these lines. The youthful white roll which defines the transition from vermillion to lip skin deflates and the lip appears flat. This white roll can be recreated with hyaluronic acid fillers. Although the lip is being augmented the result is focused on rejuvenating the appearance of the lip rather than filling it up. The architecture is restored the radial lip lines effaced. No more lipstick bleeding. This can be done without the stigma associated with lip augmentation.
