What Is Sculptra Fillers?
Is a facial filler which is different from the hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane. This is a synthetic product which we convert to collagen over a six week period of time. The advantage to Sculptra over the hyaluronic acids is the product is a particulate and not a cohesive gel. Gels stick together and if not injected well can create columns or beads. This can happen with sculptra as well if it is not injected well but it is less likely. It is this physical property which makes it a good filler for the mobile middle portion of the face. This is the region below the cheek bone but above the corners of the mouth.
As the product needs to be converted from what it is to collagen, there is a period of time required between injection and when the final results are actually seen. This is usually about four to six weeks. Sculptra helps create a more youthful appearance through a series of treatments. By replacing lost collagen in the face, we restore a natural youthful fullness.
Your Sculptra Fillers will be performed in Dr. Robert Kessler's surgery center located in Corona Del Mar.
How Sculptra Fillers are Used
Sculptra is an ideal facial filler for the mobile submalar region of the face and the pre-jowl area found on either side of the chin. Healthy men and women with mid-face volume loss over the age of 30 are great candidates for treatment with Sculptra. Performed in the office, injections take about 30 minutes. Anesthesia is not necessary for the non-invasive procedure because local anesthetic is included in the product.
Sculptra is made of a synthetic biocompatible and biodegradable material called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Injections are made just under the skin in the submalar cheeks of the face, using specialized injection techniques. Sculptra may also be used in the marionette lines around the mouth, to improve the appearance of chin wrinkles, and to add volume in the mid-face.
Multiple injections are made during the procedure using a fine cannula. Repeat treatments may be needed 4-6 weeks after the initial injections to yield the best results.
Unlike the other facial fillers, facial massage is required after Sculptra injections. This is to increase blood flow in the region of the injection site to enhance the conversion of the product to collagen and avoid the formation of nodules.
Sculptra Fillers Results
If you have had hyaluronic acid fillers before this experience is completely different. Sculptra is dispersed throughout the region of the face with cannulas. Upon completion of the injections the face is often much more full than you would expect but this is predominantly the fluid used to deliver the Sculptra. This fluid is absorbed in 24 to 48 hours and then it looks as if nothing was done. Gradually over the subsequent four to six weeks do you see the facial volume appear. Cold compresses can be used to minimize any temporary soreness following treatment. There is no downtime associated with Sculptra injections but bruising and minor swelling are not uncommon. Makeup may be applied afterwards. Follow up at 4-6 weeks is required to assess the results and decide if further treatment is needed.

Dr. Kessler is exceptional! Listening to his patient’s needs and concerns is important to him, while giving honest feedback. I also enjoy his professionalism and sense of humor. Dr. Kessler never tries to “sell” procedures he offers. In fact, he doesn’t need to since he’s quite talented in his field, and I’m sure he also has many returning patients It’s not easy finding a doctor like Dr. Kessler!
